Rockbarton Garden Centre: December Reflections
Is it really December already? I don’t know about you, but this year, it feels like time has lost its usual rhythm. As I held our first Wreath Workshop in late November, it felt more like March than the beginning of the festive season. Perhaps it’s the unseasonably mild weather we’ve been experiencing, or maybe it’s the later-than-usual Black Friday hustle, but the Christmas spirit seemed elusive.
That was until I stepped back into the workshop after fetching more holly and eucalyptus. The air was filled with the rich, unmistakable scents of freshly cut foliage, nobilis fir, and the warm spices of mulled wine. Suddenly, the season’s magic took hold, and it finally felt like Christmas was just around the corner.
December at Rockbarton
December is always one of the busiest months here at Rockbarton, and this year is no exception. Alongside our beloved Wreath Workshops and bustling Christmas Market, we’re also in full swing with Christmas trees, festive decorations, and, new this year, a Santa Experience!
If you’re still looking for a visit with Santa, don’t worry—we still have a few spots left on Fridays and Saturdays up until December 21st. But act fast; spaces are filling quickly!
What’s Happening in the Garden?
Mild weather has been the defining feature of this season, and it’s had a surprising effect on the garden. Many of my perennials are still putting on a fantastic display, far longer than I’d usually expect for this time of year. It’s a welcome treat to see flashes of color when the garden would typically be settling into its winter slumber.
If you’re itching to get outside, December is a great time to tackle some gardening tasks:
- Tidy Up: Clear away the last of the autumn leaves to keep your beds looking neat and reduce pests.
- Plant Winter Bloomers: This is the perfect time to plant Hellebores, also known as the Christmas Rose, which will add elegance and color to your garden in the darkest months. They will flower from November right through to nearly May next year
- Protect Tender Plants: Ensure frost-sensitive plants are wrapped or moved to sheltered spots as the weather cools. Ensuring that you have taken in any delicate plants, such as Geraniums, Begonias and watch those Tree Ferns during the blasts of colder weather.
